Dear Colleague, The Physical Review Journal Club returns April 28 with an exclusive conversation with author Charlotte de Blois (École Normale Supérieure de Lyon, France) discussing the recently published Physical Review Fluids paper "Canopy elastic turbulence: Spontaneous formation of waves in beds of slender microposts." In the paper, de Blois and colleagues systematically studied the coupling between spontaneously emerging, low-velocity waves and a microfluidic canopy consisting of micropillars by combining flow velocimetry experiments and high-speed tracking of the pillars. If the canopy is composed of flexible structures, the passage of a wave deflects the structures locally in a manner reminiscent of the emergence of the Monami waves observed in inertial turbulence over canopies of vegetation. Due to the analogies with classical (inertial) canopy turbulence, they named their observed phenomenon canopy elastic turbulence. De Blois will provide a short presentation of their results followed by a live question-and-answer session where all attendees will have the opportunity to discuss the research. When: April 28, 2023 3:00 a.m. ET The paper under discussion: Canopy elastic turbulence: Spontaneous formation of waves in beds of slender microposts Charlotte de Blois, Simon J. Haward, and Amy Q. Shen Phys. Rev. Fluids 8, 023301 | The session will be moderated by: PRFluids Associate Editor Cécile Cottin-Bizonne (University of Lyon, France) The Physical Review Journal Club events are live, interactive events allowing early-career scientists to discuss the latest published advances in physics with leaders in the field. There will be a short presentation, followed by an interactive session where the participating author will answer your questions. This is a rare opportunity to engage with the authors of important research developments in an "Ask Me Anything" format. During this interactive portion of the Journal Club, participants will be allowed to have their camera and microphone on and are encouraged to join in open discussion with the presenters. Please feel free to share this information with your institution and colleagues. Registration is free, and a video recording will be distributed to all registrants at the conclusion of the event. | | | |
