Dear Colleague, The Physical Review Journal Club returns May 4 with an exclusive conversation with authors Pedro V. P. Cunha (CIDMA, Portugal), Carlos Herdeiro (CIDMA, Portugal) and colleagues discussing their recently published Physical Review Letters paper "Exotic Compact Objects and the Fate of the Light-Ring Instability." Black holes have always been difficult to accept, which is why several studies over the years have proposed so-called exotic compact objects, or ECOs, in lieu of black holes. These hypothetical objects—which go by names like gravastars and fuzzballs—appear to explain all the black hole observational evidence without having any of the apparent black hole paradoxes. A new study of one class of ECO, the bosonic star, however, pokes holes in this argument. Cunha, Herdeiro, and colleagues will sit down with the Physical Review Journal Club and present their findings, followed by a moderated live question-and-answer session with all attendees. When: May 4, 2023 11:00 a.m. ET The paper under discussion: Exotic Compact Objects and the Fate of the Light-Ring Instability Pedro V. P. Cunha, Carlos Herdeiro, Eugen Radu, and Nicolas Sanchis-Gual Phys. Rev. Lett. 130, 061401 | The session will be moderated by: Emanuele Berti (Johns Hopkins University) The Physical Review Journal Club events are live, interactive events allowing early-career scientists to discuss the latest published advances in physics with leaders in the field. There will be a short presentation, followed by an interactive session where the participating author will answer your questions. This is a rare opportunity to engage with the authors of important research developments in an "Ask Me Anything" format. During this interactive portion of the Journal Club, participants will be allowed to have their camera and microphone on and are encouraged to join in open discussion with the presenters. Please feel free to share this information with your institution and colleagues. Registration is free, and a video recording will be distributed to all registrants at the conclusion of the event. | | | |
