Dear Colleague, The Physical Review Journal Club returns December 5, 2022 with an exclusive conversation with authors James Roney and Sergey Ovchinnikov (Harvard University) on their recent Physical Review Letters paper "State-of-the-Art Estimation of Protein Model Accuracy Using AlphaFold." In a recent breakthrough, a machine-learning model called AlphaFold significantly advanced the ability to predict the 3D structure of proteins from their amino-acid sequences. Roney and Ovchinnikov have shown that AlphaFold has learned how to predict protein folding in a way that reflects the underlying physical amino-acid interactions. This finding suggests that machine learning could guide the understanding of physical processes too complex to be accurately modeled from first principles. Roney and Ovchinnikov will sit down with the Physical Review Journal Club to share how they were able to modify AlphaFold to achieve these results, what modifications they made to the algorithm and how this technique can also unlock the methods in which proteins fold, and thus open paths to exciting applications. After a brief presentation, the authors will be available to answer all participant questions in a live question-and-answer session. Registration is free and a recording of the session will be distributed to all registrants. When: December 5, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. EST The paper under discussion: State-of-the-Art Estimation of Protein Model Accuracy Using AlphaFold James P. Roney and Sergey Ovchinnikov Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 238101 | The session will be moderated by: Bodhi Vani, University of Maryland The Physical Review Journal Club events are live, interactive events allowing early-career scientists to discuss the latest published advances in physics with leaders in the field. There will be a short presentation, followed by an interactive session where the participating author will answer your questions. This is a rare opportunity to engage with the authors of important research developments in an "Ask Me Anything" format. During this interactive portion of the Journal Club, participants will be allowed to have their camera and microphone on and are encouraged to join in open discussion with the presenters. Please feel free to share this information with your institution and colleagues. Registration is free, and a video recording will be distributed to all registrants at the conclusion of the event. | | | |
