Expanding Access to Physics Knowledge & Elevating the Visibility of Minority and Women Physicists on Wikipedia The next offering of our APS Wiki Scientist Course is coming up in February! APS is excited to offer a Wiki Scientist course focused on the critical areas of energy and climate science. In the course, participants will learn how to edit and update Wikipedia pages on energy and climate science topics and scientists. They will gain familiarity with open access tools and Wikicode, and grow as science communicators. The class will meet online between February 16 and March 30 on Thursdays at 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. PT/1:00 - 2:00 p.m. ET. (The week of March 9 will be skipped.) | Applications for the course are due January 11 Membership is NOT required to participate. For guaranteed enrollment, the registration fee is $500. Full scholarships for the course are being offered by the Forum on Diversity and Inclusion (FDI), Forum for Early Career Scientists (FECS), Forum on Education (FEd), Forum on Physics and Society (FPS), and the Forum on Outreach and Engaging the Public (FOEP). If you are not selected for one of the unit scholarships, partial scholarships are offered to all APS members. These partial scholarships will lower the registration fee to the following: - APS undergraduate members: $25
- APS graduate members: $35
- APS early career members: $65
- APS regular or lifetime members: $100
Full Course Description: The Wiki Scientist course aims to elevate the visibility of minority and women physicists on Wikipedia by providing instruction on how to create and edit Wiki biographies of minority and women physicists. This year, the winter course will focus on the critical areas of energy and climate science. Program participants will improve access to physics knowledge for a global audience, raise awareness of the accomplishments of marginalized groups within physics, and grow as science communicators by becoming familiar with: - Open access tools (systems in place on Wikipedia that protect the site against misinformation)
- Wikicode (the tone, style, and organization required for Wikipedia articles)
Participants will also reflect on subjects within their field that could be better communicated to the public and work with Wiki Education staff to identify high-value Wikipedia articles to create or improve. Lastly, participants will receive feedback from peers and collaborate across disciplines to support each other's writing process. | | | |
