Physical Review X (PRX) just published the second in the recently debuted series of PRX Perspectives, offering forward-looking viewpoints of selected research topics or fields. In this Perspective, Libor Šmejkal and Jairo Sinova, Institut für Physic, Johannes Gutenberg Universitat Mainz, along with Tomas Jungwirth, University of Nottingham, introduce altermagnetism as a new fundamental class of magnetism that stands shoulder to shoulder with the familiar ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism in the century-old field of magnetism. With their unique insights and well-informed imagination, the three authors paint an exciting research landscape for this emerging area. Many topics in condensed matter physics, including spintronics, spin-caloritronics, and superconductivity, feature prominently in that landscape. In an accompanying Editorial, PRX Editorial Board Member Dr. Igor Mazin, along with the PRX editors, charts the current landscape of magnetism by symmetry and traces the road leading to altermagnetism. Both the Perspective and the Editorial are free to read and download, enabled by PRX's fully open-access publishing model.
