Dear Colleague, On October 23, the Physical Review Journal Club hosts Concettina Sfienti and Sonia Bacca (Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, Germany), discussing how the the A1 Collaboration at Mainz Microtron (MAMI) in Germany measured the excited state of the 𝛼 particle via inelastic electron scattering. The team's findings, published in Physical Review Letters and summarized in Physics Magazine, significantly improves the precision compared to previous measurements and confirms the initial discrepancy surrounding the excitation from the ground state 0^{+1} to the first excited state 0^{+2}. The results yield new insights into the spatial structure of the 0^{+2} state while touching on fundamental questions about our understanding of nuclear interactions. Sfienti and Bacca will provide a short presentation of their results followed by a live question-and-answer session where all attendees will have the opportunity to discuss the research moderated by Dean Lee, Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, Michigan State University. Registration is free and a video recording will be provided for all registrants. When: October 23, 2023 11:00 a.m. ET The paper under discussion: Measurement of the α-Particle Monopole Transition Form Factor Challenges Theory: A Low-Energy Puzzle for Nuclear Forces? S. Kegel et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 130, 152502 | The session will be moderated by: Dean Lee, Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, Michigan State University The Physical Review Journal Club events are live, interactive events allowing early-career scientists to discuss the latest published advances in physics with leaders in the field. There will be a short presentation, followed by an interactive session where the participating author will answer your questions. This is a rare opportunity to engage with the authors of important research developments in an "Ask Me Anything" format. During this interactive portion of the Journal Club, participants will be allowed to have their camera and microphone on and are encouraged to join in open discussion with the presenters. Please feel free to share this information with your institution and colleagues. Registration is free, and a video recording will be distributed to all registrants at the conclusion of the event. | | | |
